Palestinian Simon Shaheen, virtuoso on oud and violin, and his band play ecstatic music that fuses genres—a thrilling mix of Arabic melodies, jazz improvisation and Latin American rhythms. Shaheen arranged and led the string orchestra section for the groundbreaking appearance of Sting and Cheb Mami at the Grammy Awards. His recent CD Blue Flame, aptly named after the hottest, purest part of the fire, “speaks a glorious international musical language,” according to the Los Angeles Times.
