Thought-provoking columnist Arianna Huffington delivers the lecture Pigs at the Trough, a critique of corporate greed and political corruption, at UCSB Campbell Hall

Summary Facts:

Political commentator and author Arianna Huffington, an impassioned and independent advocate for political reform and social awareness, will deliver the lecture Pigs at the Trough on Sunday, February 2 at 3 pm in UCSB Campbell Hall. This presentation is adapted from her new book, Pigs at the Trough: How Corporate Greed and Political Corruption Are Undermining America (January 2003, Crown Publishing). In her talk Huffington yanks back the curtain on the alliance between CEOs, politicians, lobbyists, and Wall Street bankers who have shown a disregard for the average American and undermined our nation’s core values. Bill Maher, former host of Politically Incorrect, claims, “Arianna Huffington has written the most entertaining tour guide to hell since Virgil led Dante through the Inferno. Crooked CEOs beware!”

Named one of Washington’s most influential commentators by both Newsweek and People, Huffington writes a nationally syndicated column that exposes the corruption of our political system and the bankruptcy of political leadership. She also is the thought-provoking voice from “somewhere beyond convention” on KCRW’s Left, Right & Center. A one-time Republican, Huffington chooses to operate outside the two-party system. Her disillusionment with party politics stems from her realization that the Democrats and Republicans are more interested in serving the narrow interests of their campaign contributors than serving the people they were supposedly elected to represent.

Huffington is the author of nine books including How to Overthrow the Government and Greetings from the Lincoln Bedroom. She is the author of two highly-acclaimed biographies: Maria Callas: The Woman Behind the Legend was an international bestseller while Picasso: Creator and Destroyer was adapted into the Merchant-Ivory film Surviving Picasso, starring Sir Anthony Hopkins.

Huffington came to national prominence as a pundit in 1996 on Comedy Central, at first covering the national political conventions, and then appearing in the occasional segment “Strange Bedfellows” on Politically Incorrect. This witty point-counterpoint with Al Franken featured the two arguing from their right and left perspectives while in their PJs in bed (they were even joined by Congressman Barney Frank for one memorable segment). Huffington has made numerous guest appearances on other television programs, such as Nightline, The Charlie Rose Show, Crossfire and The Today Show.

Originally from Greece, Huffington moved to England when she was sixteen and graduated from Cambridge University with a M.A. in Economics. At twenty-one she became President of the famed debating society, the Cambridge Union. Currently she serves on a number of boards that promote community solutions to social problems, including the Points of Light Foundation and A Place Called Home that works with at-risk children in South Central Los Angeles. A one-time Santa Barbara resident, she lives in Los Angeles with her two daughters.
