Habib Koité and Hassan Hakmoun

Tuesday, February 3
8 pm, Campbell Hall

“Koité is something so rare and wonderful
that no world music think tank could conjure him up.”

—Rhythm Magazine

“Hakmoun’s group sounds like a Moroccan version
of the James Brown band.”

—The New York Times

Two magnetic world music superstars in one show: magnificent Malian guitarist/singer Habib Koité and mesmerizing Moroccan sintir (lute) player/ vocalist Hassan Hakmoun perform with their bands. Coming from a long line of griots, Habib Koité developed a unique guitar style that mixes American blues with Malian sounds. Hassan Hakmoun sings and plucks out propulsive, funky, circular patterns on the sintir, playing in the ecstatic style of the Gnawa.
