The national tour of Sing-A-Long Wizard of Oz—complete with costume contests and audience participation—comes to UCSB Campbell Hall

Summary Facts:

The National Tour of Sing-A-Long Wizard of Oz, the new, interactive theatrical film experience based on the most beloved motion picture of all time The Wizard of Oz, comes to UCSB Campbell Hall on Sunday, May 23 at 2 & 7:30 pm.

After its world premiere in Chicago in Winter 2003, Sing-A-Long Wizard of Oz is touring nationally and internationally with stops including New York, Los Angeles, Boston, Denver and London.

Sing-A-Long Wizard of Oz is a splashy night of theatre and film mixed with a festive costume-filled celebration. This Oscar®-winning film will be presented as never seen before—fully restored for the big screen. Sing-A-Long Wizard of Oz invites audiences of all ages to celebrate the story of Dorothy and her fantastical journey through Oz by joining in and singing along to some of history’s best-known and loved songs (subtitled for new fans) in a theatre filled with audience members dressed up as Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tin Man, Cowardly Lion, The Wicked Witch of the West and other favorite Wizard of Oz characters.

Sing-A-Long Wizard of Oz is hosted by a spirited on-stage master-of-ceremonies who will lead the crowd through a comical interactive guidebook to the evening’s audience participation of gestures and expressions, including singing along with Dorothy and hissing at the Wicked Witch. All of this entertaining audience involvement adds to the fun of watching the film. Plus, an “Audience Fun Pack” is provided free with every ticket to enhance your participation experience. Imagination and creativity are generously rewarded during a pre-show costume contest. Sing-A-Long Wizard of Oz is a happy sing-out-loud night of smiles and laughter, enhancing the classic movie.

The Wizard of Oz has become perhaps the most beloved film of all-time since its release in 1939. It cost MGM a then-unheard-of $2,777,000 and earned only $3,000,000 on its initial release, but gained in popularity once it started airing on television beginning in 1956. Film critic Roger Ebert claims, “The Wizard of Oz has a wonderful surface of comedy and music, special effects and excitement, but we still watch it six decades later because its underlying story penetrates straight to the deepest insecurities of childhood, stirs them and then reassures them. As adults, we love it because it reminds us of a journey we have taken. That is why any adult in control of a child is sooner or later going to suggest a viewing of The Wizard of Oz.

Journey from Kansas to Oz and back again as young and old alike celebrate the golden age of movies in a theatrical setting. This truly is the “Wonderful Wizard of Oz!”
